Brolly Arts

from some participants:

"I have witnessed the growth of a remarkable arts organization, an entity that generates consistently excellent and well thought out projects, an entity that is fiscally sound and respected by the greater community, an entity which is totally dedicated to the ongoing professional development of artists and their process. Brolly Arts' philosophy is clear: strong work comes from a strong process. Brolly Arts' goal is to allow artists to let go of their concern for a final product and focus on artistic process, a focus that facilities risk taking and artistic growth. Most often, the work that results is exciting, innovative and of high quality. Time and time again, the artists who have been sponsored by Brolly Arts report artistic breakthroughs as a result of the freedom given to them. I am one of those artists. Were it not for Brolly Arts, I probably would not be choreographing today."

"Ms. Sanyer instigated at new direction for my artwork by her willingness to support two very important aspects of artmaking. First, she encouraged me to think about something that pushed me outside of the norm. This kind of support is very rare in the fuding world, but what made it even more remarkable is she encouraged me to think about the process alone. She did not need the process to result in a 'product.' This non-product based freedom was crucial because you step outside your norm, the end goal is not always clear. You need time and faith to honestly explore a new world... This kind of support is rare, yet is exactly the kind of support that artists most need to further their work. This single grant has been the most influential to my artistry."

Jan Ekert, choreographer and artistic director of Jan Ekert & Dancers, about Project New Moment

"My early involvement with the Choreographer's Lab helped me understand a body of idiosyncrasies and tricks that some might call my artistic voice. Since then, I have followed Brolly Arts projects with admiration, observing how they provide guidance to artists who seek it and insight to audiences fascinated by new creations at all levels of completion…True to expectations, the workshop was a mind-blowing event cheered by everyone involved and, almost a year later, I am still picking through what I learned. For SB Dance as a whole, it was a seminal moment where we began comprehending our own brand of fusion theater….I can not emphasize enough how important it is for artists of all types to have a program structured specifically around the creative process. Nationwide, Brolly Arts is one of the few entities offering opportunities like this."

Stephen Brown, director of SB Dance and a Choreographer's Lab participant

"In April 2002, I had the pleasure of working with Amy McDonald Sanyer on a project in which she presented the Ahn Trio in an innovative and exciting program of music by the young, heralded composer, Kenji Bunch, combined with dance choreographed by Stephen Koester. It was a brilliant project.

Amy's energy and creative approach combined with attention to detail and passion for the art and artists, made this project stand out above the thousands I have booked in my thirty plus years as an artist's manager. She encourages artists to take risks, to grow, and to discover something new in their artistic expression as well as to captivate the audience. I have booked the Ahn Trio all over the world. I have served on the National Endowment for the Arts and have worked with arts producers, administrators across the country. The experience working with Amy was refreshing, exhilarating, and successful.

Brolly Arts enhances the cultural life of the community. Dedicated to the creation, development, production, and promotion of the performing and visual arts, it could be a model for arts organizations all over the U.S."

Joanne Rile, president, Joanne Rile Artists Management, Inc.

"I have had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Brolly Arts project. In 2002, Brolly Arts developed and presented a world premier of music and dance and Kingsbury Hall. For this project, I was commissioned to choreograph a new 30 to 40 minute work. The entire experience, the concert, the commission, and working with Brolly Arts, was one of the highlights of my professional career. I felt great support yet artistic independence in creating the new work. The commission both pushed me and allowed me to explore deeply and helped me to develop a work that I am particularly proud of.

My experience with Brolly matches or surpasses any event in my past professional history. The scope of the project was so stimulating, challenging me to strive for ever-greater excellence. Amy and Brolly Arts were thoroughly invested in the project and provided total support for me as an artist and human being. I could not have felt more nurtured.

Without Brolly Arts, our arts community would be denied fresh, innovative, and exceptional arts events, events that no other organization in our area has the vision or drive to make happen. I can think of no other organization in our community or nationally for that matter, who think so broadly and strive to play such an important and supportive role in an artist's development and in a community's cultural life."
